Turner Prize winning artist brings London 2012 Fest exhibit to town
Turner prize winning artist Jeremy Deller is bringing Sacrilege, a life-size inflatable replica of Stonehenge, to Skegness next week.
A CHANCE to bounce around on a Turner Prize winning artist’s latest exhibition will be on offer in Skegness next week.
Jeremy Deller will be displaying his ‘Sacrilege’ art instalment at Tower Gardens on Monday as part of a 30 date tour coinciding with the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The life-size inflatable replica of Stonehenge is intended to provide a light-hearted appreciation of one of the UK’s most iconic historic landmarks.
“A lot of my work deals with history and Sacrilege is no exception, this is a way to get reacquainted with ancient Britain with your shoes off,” explained Deller.
East Lindsey District Council has already fostered close ties with London 2012 by coinciding its annual SO Festival with the Torch Relay arrival and is delighted to have continued that relationship through this exhibit.
Leader of the council, and London 2012 champion for Lincolnshire, Coun Doreen Stephenson said: “We’re delighted to have been able to discuss this exciting opportunity with the London 2012 Festival and secure a visit to Skegness, which we hope will help attract visitors to the area and give local people something exciting and different to do.
“East Lindsey has a growing reputation for being able to deliver high quality cultural activities that are not only broadening tourism and raising the profile of the area, but also inspiring the community.”
Sacrilege has been funded by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, and the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art.
It was first exhibited at the National Botanic Garden of Wales on June 21 to mark the first day of the London 2012 Festival and has already visited eight UK towns and cities and 15 boroughs in London.
With the support of Arts Council England, it will continue its tour throughout the Paralympic Games, including its Skegness visit.
Chief executive of Arts Council England Alan Davey said: “Deller’s playful and irreverent work is bound to capture the hearts, minds and inner-child of people across the country.”
