A passionate young surfer’s love of the ocean has inspired her to represent its ‘spiritual energy and breathtaking beauty’ in an art exhibition currently displaying in Skegness.

Emma Rawlins’ stunning seascapes will be on show at the Hildreds Centre’s H-Art Gallery until Tuesday after a special preview event held last night.

The 23-year-old Skegness artist says her coastal upbringing has nurtured a long-standing passion for the ocean, which has driven her artistic direction.

She said: “Surfing has drawn me to the ocean, I’ve worked with the RNLI doing beach life-guarding over the summer and it’s something I’m hugely passionate about - it’s who I am.

“I try to put the energy I’ve got for surfing and the seaside and all of that passion into my work as well as the more peaceful side of the ocean.”

The former Skegness Grammar School student’s solo exhibition is the latest in a popular series of art and photography displays to make use of a vacant retail unit in the shopping centre.

Emma has praised those behind the venture for creating opportunities for the town’s artistic community which would be otherwise lacking.

She said: “I’m relatively new to exhibiting my work, I’ve been painting for quite a long time, however it’s only become a serious thing recently and it’s quickly helped me realise that it’s what I want to do as a full time career.

“It’s taken off really well so far, I’m doing what I love every day and I’m hoping to open a workshop on Algitha Road.

“H-Art has given me the confidence to realise this is something I can actually do and can go on to bigger things.”

Digital artist and curator of an international touring exhibition John Byford was delighted to offer Emma an outlet for her ‘fabulous’ work.

He believes the gallery and ongoing Made in England exhibition has helped begin an artistic movement in the town and expose its hidden talent.

“There are so many positive things happening at the moment, it’s great,” he said.
