Skegness Mayor tells ‘snipers and gripers’ to ‘put up or shut up’

Snipers and gripers in Skegness have been told to ‘put up or shut up’ by the town’s mayor in a scathing attack on their relentless negativity.

Coun Mark Anderson launched into an angry tirade at last night’s Skegness Town Council meeting accusing certain quarters of having a detrimental impact on positive attempts to improve the resort.

“I’ve got one thing to say about the snipers and gripers - we’ve got an election coming up in May so please put up or shut up,” he said

“If you want to make a change, put yourself forward.

“I’m sick and tired of people putting other people down who are trying to do something in this town.”

Speaking after the meeting, Coun Anderson explained mounting frustration over recent weeks and months had sparked his outburst, which he hopes may silence certain naysayers, whose incessant negativity, he fears, could jeopardise major investment in the town.

He said: “I’ve been busy working with colleagues in the public and business sector, without pay, taking time off from work, spending thousands of pounds out of my own pocket to try and achieve something positive for this town.

“Then, you take a look on Facebook and all there is, is a constant barrage of negativity - it certainly doesn’t inspire me or anyone else reading it to continue working for the town - it’s extremely disheartening.

“My family have said I need sectioning for putting up with this all and still doing anything for the town.”

The mayor’s comments have since been echoed by other councillors who have shared his resentment to the ‘moaners and groaners’ for some time and were pleased to see the issue aired publicly.

Coun George Saxon, also speaking after the meeting, said: “There seems to be a lot of knockers out there on Facebook - they are all talkers, no doers and that’s the problem.

“People just want to knock everything that goes on in this town and everyone else decides to jump on the band wagon - it’s really dangerous.”

“Take this canopy project for Scarbrough Esplanade - if all the negativity gets back to the funders there’s a real danger it might not go ahead because these things have got to be backed by the community for them to work.”
