Northcote Heavy Horse Centre in Great Steeping is set to be open for a number of days this half-term.

“If you’re looking for a fun family day out this half-term then why not visit The Northcote Heavy Horse Centre,” said a spokesperson.

“Visitors are invited to meet the horses, learn about the various breeds as well as being able to take part in “hands-on grooming sessions”.

“And in the afternoon demonstrations will take place which you can also assist with.”

The centre will be open for visitors on Sunday, February 17, Monday 18, Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20.

New pony Orbit, a miniature Shetland pony, will be making his first appearance too this half-term; a new addition to the centre and one who is sure to be a big hit with visitors. Gates will be open at 11am and visitors are advised to be there for the 11.15am start so as not to miss anything. Gates close at 3pm. Admission is by donation.

Meanwhile, manager of the sanctuary, Terena Bolam said the centre, which is a registered charity, is also looking for volunteers for helping with the horses and their training.

Voluntary help is also needed for running the shop and tea room for the visitor season which properly starts from Easter Sunday until October.

“So if folks are interested in helping out and seeing what we do then this February is great for doing that. It’ s a good chance to meet with us and talk to other volunteers also,” Terena added.
