Soldier on target in triple Afghanistan challenge

A CHARITABLE soldier is currently undertaking an energetic triple challenge while on duty in Afghanistan to help raise money for a worthy cause.

Skegness soldier, Edd Howard, 37, who is Warrant Officer Class 2, is currently deployed in Helmand Province, Afghanistan and is already making significant progress in his ambitious challenge.

Edd is running, cycling and rowing the distance from his base in Afghanistan to the Lifeboat station in Skegness, in aid of the RNLI and the Royal British Legion.

His aim is to raise at least £1 per mile covered and the money will be split equally between the two charities.

Speaking last time to the Standard (September 21 edition) Edd said of his wish to raise money for the two charities, “I’ve been to Afghanistan twice before and when you’re not working there isn’t a lot to do.

“So I spend hours and hours in the gym and this time, decided to set myself a goal. The reason I chose to support the two charities is the fact that the Royal British Legion is close to my heart and I have friends in the RNLI crew.”

Edd’s aim is to complete his challenge during his six month deployment using the gym equipment at his base in Lashkar Gah.

And so far he has covered more than 3500km of the 5562.5km distance and is well on track to finish before he comes home in April.

“He is managing to cover the mileage required by going to the gym twice a day, before and after duty,” said a spokesperson.

During his working day, Edd’s duties include working in the Task Force Helmand Operations Centre coordinating air and ground support for troops.

You can sponsor Edd per mile by dropping money into the Lifeboat Station, Skegness Standard office in the Hildreds Centre, The North Shore Hotel, The Vine Hotel, Barnet Babes Hair Dressers on Church Road North or G & O Mechanics, Albert Road.
