Obituary: Mr E. G. Ball
THE death has occurred of Mr E. G Ball, formerly of Revesby Drive, Skegness.
He was 99 years old and for many years had been living with his daughter in Crich, Derbyshire.
He was born in Nottingham and started his working life as a printer. Upon the outbreak of war he joined the Royal Air Force and was a radio operator and air gunner on a Manchester bomber, which was a forerunner of the Lancaster bomber.
In 1941 the plane he was in was shot down over Germany, the crew baled out of the burning aircraft, he was captured and spent the next four years in several prisoner of war camps, including Stalag Luft III. He escaped three times, once dressed as a woman, but after a week his beard gave him away and he was recaptured.
Mr Ball returned home in poor health and in 1952 the family moved to skegness for the bracing air and he quickly recovered his health.
He taught at Skegness Junior school for 25 years and after retirement from teaching, worked as a printer at Derbyshire miners holiday camp and also as a manager at New Trend holiday camp.
He enjoyed playing bridge, which he learnt to play in prisoner of war camps, and represented the country for many years.
He leaves three children, Gordon, Graham and Vanessa, grandchildren Amelia, Laura, Simon and Andrew and great grandchildren Leon, Luis, James and Archie.
His funeral took place in Crich, Derbyshire.
