Wainfleet conservation area scaled back to town’s ‘historic core’
Wainfleet residents will be given greater freedom to renovate their homes after a conservation area in the town restricting building alterations was scaled back.
East Lindsey District Council recently agreed to limit the conservation area to Market Place, High Street and St John’s Street, enabling dozens of households previously restricted by the legislation to alter the appearance of their homes.
Coun Andrew Pogson of Wainfleet Town Council has welcomed the decision, which he says the town’s residents had shown emphatic support for during a recent public meeting.
He said: “There had been a ground swell of public opinion that it was restricting people from renovating their properties and residents had asked the town council if there was anything we could do about it.
“We listened to what the public had to say and agreed to help so it is great to see that local people can put something forward and then see their wishes carried through.”
A distirct council report on the motion recommended that the conservation area be reduced to focus on Wainfleet’s ‘historic core,’ which determines its character.
Many of the properties previously contained within the conservation area, the report claims, did not ‘display specific features important to the character of the area’ and were therefore detracting from the focus of the legislation.
