Fly-tipping increase blamed on Skegness recycling centre cuts

Fly-tipping offenders are being targeted by local authorities after a reported 36 per cent increase in the problem, a councillor has announced.

Coun Mark Smith said that Lincolnshire county Council and East Lindsey District Council were working together to address the problem, which has cost the taxpayer around £70,000 this year.

Speaking at the latest Skegness town Council meeting he said: “We are working on a joint project to identify those responsible and prosecute if we can.”

Coun Smith’s announcement followed comments made during the public session by Skegness resident Dell Claxton who blamed the problem on county council cuts to its Wharf Lane recycling centre’s opening times.

He said: “Someone’s made a bit of a mess-up.”

Coun Smith, who is also a Lincolnshire County Council member, said the district council’s figures were ‘somewhat disproportionate’ as an indicator of how the cuts had worsened fly-tipping because 70 per cent of the offences had been perpetrated by businesses, which were not entitled to use the centre.

However he did agree that it would have been better not to have cut the hours during summer, which he explained had been carried out to contend with significant budget reductions.
