White Christmas may be just a dream

If, like the song, you are dreaming of a white Christmas, then brace yourself for disappointment.

The Met Office has said that a widespread white Christmas is “unlikely” this year, but has conceded that there might still be a chance of snow up north.

Snow or no snow, Britain’s travel plans could be seriously disrupted by Storm Barbara bringing rain and 70mph gales.

Forecasters warn gusts could hit 70mph this weekend – bringing potential disruption to airports, trains and roads.

The storm, which could be named Barbara if it becomes severe enough, would be the second of the season.

Mark Wilson from the Met Office said: “There’s the potential we could name the storm arriving into Christmas Eve. But it’s too early to say. People should keep in touch with the forecast and be aware of any warnings issued.

“After recent calm weather, the Christmas period looks wet and windy, with wind and rain for all areas.”

He added that low pressure systems will arrive from the West and all areas will be wet and windy on Thursday.

Mr Wilson said heavier, more persistent rain will arrive then with snow possible on higher ground in Scotland.

The chances of the UK being covered in the white stuff are slim, although it might still be worth a flutter, as what is officially classed as a white Christmas is one (yes, one!) snowflake observed falling in the 24 hours of 25 December at an official weather station somewhere in the UK.

Currently, William Hill is offering odds of 8/1 for a white Christmas down in London.

They are currently offering odds of 6/4 for a white Christmas in Glasgow, and 2/1 in Leeds.

Bookmaker Coral reckons Aberdeen is the most likely place for snow at Christmas at 3-1, ahead of Newcastle at 9-2.

Manchester and Leeds are both rated at 11-2, while London, Liverpool and Belfast are now at odds of 6-1.
