Because this small SUV has a lot of boxes, and they’re all ticked
Audi’s smallest SUV isn’t exactly cheap, with a starting price of just over £20,000, but it’s right up with rivals like the Seat Ateca and the Nissan Qashqai. You could argue it’s a cut above some of the others in this sector, like Mini’s Countryman or Renault’s Captur, and here are the arguments to back that up.
We’d probably start by pointing out just how fabulous the cabin is. True, it looks pretty good from the outside, but as a driver you’re going to mostly see it from the inside. Audi really does have cabin design sewn up these days, with lovely materials, great design and a classy ambience.
Never mind the quality, see the quantity – of space. For such a small SUV there is a surprising amount of room in the cabin, front and rear. The boot is adequately big, rather than class-leading, but overall this feels like a spacious and luxurious cabin.
The driver is particularly well catered for, with a driver’s seat that has a plethora of adjustment to help people of different sizes get comfy behind the wheel. The higher driving position endowed by the SUV design does help with visibility as well.
The base SE trim gives you a reasonable amount of kit, but we’d go for the Sport level as that brings in sat nav, auto lights and wipers, cruise control and much more.
Which is all great, but so far we haven’t actually driven the thing. You’ll need an engine for that. Fortunately Audi foresaw this situation, and offers a range of engines although we do have a favourite. That is the 1.4-litre petrol unit, pumping out 148bhp. That’s quite enough to drive things forward with some vigour, but it’s a clever unit that is remarkably efficient as well, partly by being able to shut down two of the four cylinders when they’re not needed.
The Q2 looks like an SUV so you might expect to have a fair bit of roll when you corner, but actually this Audi handles much more like a road car. It stays flat through the turns and you also get progressive steering as standard. There’s plenty of grip and a secure package for both handling and ride.
Should it all go horribly wrong, you will be behind a battery of safety gear including auto emergency braking and all the kit you’d find in an A3. It hasn’t been tested yet, but we’d expect it to get the same five-star NCAP rating as the A3.
As yet it’s too soon to buy second hand as it’s only been on the market for less than a year but the bad news for you, and the good news for original owners, is that resale values should be very strong.
