With the arrival of the new 67-plate registrations on September 1 a number of new car manufacturers have announced their own scrappage schemes to get drivers out of older, more polluting cars and into cleaner brand-new models.

On Friday, Audi, VW, Seat, Skoda, Renault, Kia, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Toyota and Nissan joined Hyundai, Ford, Vauxhall, BMW and Mercedes in offering customers a discount on the price of a new model, at a time when traffic-related air pollution and the wider future of the car is big news.

While all the schemes have the same basic aim – get customers to ditch their old motors and trade up to a shiny new car – they all differ in the details including which vehicles are eligible, what discount they offer and what happens to your old car. And while £8,000 off a new car sounds great, it’s not as straightforward as that. To help you figure out whether any of these offers make sense for you here’s a guide to the specifics, which we’ll update as more manufacturers inevitably jump on the bandwagon:

Alfa Romeo

The offer: Up to £5,300 off selected Alfa Romeo cars
What you can trade in: Any Euro 1-4 petrol and diesel cars registered before December 31, 2009 and owned by you for at least 180 days
Eligible new vehicles and discount: Mito (excl. entry model) – £2,500; Giulietta (excl. entry model) – up to £5,300;  Giulia (excl. entry version & Quadrifoglio) – £3,250.

The offer: Up to £8,000 off selected Audi cars
What you can trade in: Any diesel car with Euro 4 or older emissions standards, registered before December 31, 2009 and owned by you for at least six months

Eligible new vehicles: BMW i3 electric or range-extender model; BMW and MINI plug-in hybrid models; any Euro 6-compliant model with CO2 emissions under 130g/km
