TRIBUTES have been paid to musician Bob Harris, a great friend of Alford Silver band, who has died from cancer,
aged 74.
Although he was never a formal member of the band, Mr Harris used to regularly travel from his home in Nottingham to play at engagements.
Band chairman Martin Briggs said: "Bob was a close friend of all of us. He was a wonderful character, a marvellous cornet player and, above all, a very nice man.
"We shall miss him dreadfully. The regular engagements he used to join us on won't be the same without him."
Mr Harris was born in Birmingham, and was always a keen musician. He originally learned the church organ, but took up the trumpet when he was a teenager and never looked back.
He was a long-term member of Newmount Brass Band, but enjoyed guesting with many bands around the country.
Mr Briggs said: "His last engagement with the Alford band was at the Manor House on July 1. He was in his usual great spirits and looking forward to playing with us at other events in the summer. Sadly it was not to be.
"He was one of the best. A true gentleman, a true bandsman and a true friend."
His funeral was held at Markeaton Crematorium, Derby, on August 11. He was cremated in his brass band uniform with his cornet mouthpiece in his hand. Alford Silver Band joined Newmount in playing at the funeral.
