A CHAMBER of commerce is being launched in Alford to represent local businesses.
There has not been a group representing business in the town since the chamber of trade which disbanded about 15 years ago.
The latest venture was suggested by Windmill Hotel landlord Bob Clifford. He managed to get as many businesses as possible to
gether earlier this month and a website and steering committee was formed within just 10 days.
Membership secretary Rob Ray explained: "Twenty years ago this town was heaving as a tourist attraction but things are going down.
"The long-term aims of the chamber are broadening as we speak because of what we are finding out as we go along in terms of the funding available.
"It's interesting when you see what clout chambers can have and what influence they can have in terms of local planning and local business development."
He said the group was looking at becoming more than just a group of business people meeting each month, but is considering becoming a community interest group which would mean it is eligible for business and Government funding.
It is also looking to affiliate or associate with a larger organisation such as the Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce which would further boost its influence and funding.
Mr Ray explained the chamber would like to use this money to help people enhance their businesses and the town, for example, by putting on training courses.
Another major aim of the chamber is to get as many businesses and interested people together as possible to share advice, experience and expertise for everyone's benefit.
The chamber, chaired by Mr Clifford, is seeking more committee members and members. It is open to the surrounding villages.
Anyone interested can contact Mr Clifford, tel 01507 463377, or Mr Ray, tel 01507 463976.
